New Year’s Eve

I used to feel like I had to do something important on New Year’s Eve. It was my late husband John’s birthday. His family didn’t make a big deal out of birthdays and, when I married him, I was shocked to discover he’d never had a birthday party. So when he turned forty, I had a big deal party. Combined with New Year’s Eve, it was a fun night. Guests brought gag gifts to rub in his over the hill status and we danced and had a great time. It was at home so we didn’t even have to worry about driving after all the champagne at midnight. We served coffee to the guests who had to.new year

As we got older, we tried to keep celebrating but the traffic, the cost of a big evening out, kept us from really enjoying those kinds of nights as much as we used to. By the time John was gone, I was used to struggling to stay awake until midnight so we could share a kiss. I know, lame. But if you’re over fifty, you’ll understand. Singles probably still worry about that important date and who they will get to kiss at midnight. Now I’m usually asleep by the time the new year rolls around.

This year I heard friends talk about babysitting grandchildren for New Year’s Eve. My own child doesn’t go out on the holiday and would never dream of asking me to babysit. Wise choice. He knows that’s not me. I have several pals who never had kids and one who is a rebel like I am. So we’re getting together with a good movie or two and a bottle of bubbly. I have a guest bedroom if the drive home is a problem. Yes, we’re showing our age, but so what? I think as you get older, you have the right to do what you want and ignore what others might think of you.

Are you eager to party hearty and wear a silly hat to bring in 2015? Or will you be like me, watching the people in Times Square on TV and thinking it looks too cold and too crowded for comfort. It’s cool to watch the ball drop, but not the same without Dick Clark. Yes, I’m showing my age, which I won’t admit to, but I’ve earned my comforts.

I’d like to hear what you’ll be doing on the last day of 2014. Was it a good year for you or a disaster that you’ll be glad to see the end of? My year was okay. I’m healthy and so is my family. As time goes by, I realize that’s pretty much all I need to hope for. Comment here. I’ve got an autographed copy of Real Vampires Say Read My Hips for one commentor who posts by January 5.

I’m not much of a party goer…even when I was younger but most of my New Year’s Eve have been with either my friends or family. Since this will be our first New Year’s in our new home…we are going back to the home we left to celebrate the New Year. I’m blessed that we are meeting the New Year surrounded by all my family members. We all lose someone this past year due to health reason and even though there will be no fancy dancing or umbrella drinks at our event…bootie pjs, french vanilla coffee with a pile of dvds will be how we’re ringing in the New Year.

Blessed be Gerry and thank you for books. ♡

  2. My husband works nights so I’ll be hanging out with our 4 year old. I’ll probably have a glass of bubbly and crash by 10.

2014 was just an ok year. Nothing special. I’ll ring in the new year the same way I have for the last 17 years movie and pig out night with my nephew.

New Year’s at home with a few beverages watching the ball drop on tv is my idea of the perfect night! I also think it’s too cold and crowded out. Plus, being Irish, I call New Year’s “amateur night”! I’m looking forward to 2014 ending and fresh start for 2015. Have a fun night and all the best in the new year. Thanks for all the entertaining years you provided with the hilarious and talented Glory!

We have always stayed home with the kids and watched Dick Clark and the ball come down. I always call my 2 best friends back home in NC to wish them a Happy New Year even though technically mine comes an hour later. I only have one at home still, as my son recently moved into his first place. But he is coming over this year to spend it with us, which makes me crazy happy. I am blessed to have them both in my life and they know I love them more than anything. They are my blessings, the best part of me and I am praying this next year brings many good things for them and my friends. A good book, a pot of coffee and my best friends to share it with…these things I look forward too☺

I don’t go out partying on NYE like I used to, but I do still go out. Our normal plans are to have a nice dinner with our best friends (another couple) and watch the ball drop on TV at a British-themed pub. However, they are out of town this year, so we’re getting together with different friends. The plan is to go downtown and watch the pear drop (a much smaller version of the ball dropping in NYC). I’ve lived in this city for over a decade and have yet to see it, so why not? As I’m getting older, I don’t care too much what my plans are – as long as I’m spending the time with people I love. ❤

  7. I haven’t gone out for New Year’s Eve since my early 20’s. I’ve babysat my niece and nephew a number of times since it’s his birthday as well. Even now that I have a boyfriend, we don’t go out either. The crowds and all the ridiculous idiots that drink and drive or drunken fools just don’t make it appealing. This year since the weather is only -15 we’re having a bonfire in the yard and sitting back there for a couple drinks.

Ps. I love your writing and am still trying to find the latest book on paper. I don’t have an E-reader but also love the smell of the paper and ink. Happy New Year Gerry.

    • Brr. So I won’t complain about the forty degree weather here in south Texas. The bonfire sounds lovely. The paperback is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble but you have to order it. Thanks for being a faithful reader!

  8. I’m with you Gerry on almost everything you wrote. I attended my first New Year’s Eve party at 35 years old. I miss Dick Clark, but Ryan Seacrest is doing a good job filling his shoes.
I had a good year and feel content about it. I usually view life as a cup half full.
I hope you have a fantastic 2015 and can’t wait to read what you write next. (I miss – one line Wednesdays.)

    • I like Ryan too. As I get into the novella, I’ll start one-line Wednesdays again. I’ve been chilling over the holidays. Will get busy again next week. Thanks for caring. My cup is half full too. Happy new year!

We used to always attend a watchnight all night church servise, but as weve gotten older, we can’t stay awake that long LOL.
This year my hubby has to work (3pm to midnight) and since it’s going to be cold and rainy Ill just be thankful that he gets home safely.
PS I already miss Glory. Give us tose novelettes soon, please.

    • Starting the novella next week. Will think about your hubby too. Not good driving at that time but he’s the one who will be sober and can dodge the idiots. Yes, I usually conk out before midnight. Thanks for being there for Glory. I miss her too.

Tonight I will be reading a book and putting my new baby to bed. 2014 has been a good year since it’s brought the birth of our first child. I’m excited to see what 2015 will bring to our family. Have a happy new year everyone

    • A new baby. She’ll keep you up. Or is it a he? Anyway, babies are so precious. Enjoy. They grow up faster than you think they will. Mine is grown and married to a wonderful woman. His baby is seven now. It’s cool to see the family traits carried on. He has my sense of humor. Love it!

I’m afraid my NYE wasn’t very exciting. This is the busiest time of year for me at work, so I came home from work at 5, logged into work remotely, and worked until 1am with my dogs in my lap. I didn’t even realize it was past midnight.

My NYE was spent in bed trying to sleep off a cold. I’ve felt terrible for about a week. Spending the evening with friends, watching movies & having drinks, sounds like a perfect way to ring in the new year. I hope you enjoyed it.

I got several of your books for Christmas and will start reading them as soon as I’m feeling better.
