Why I Love Animals

Imagel

I post pictures of my dog Jet just about every Saturday. But let me tell you how Jet came into my life. My late husband was captain of a flyball team. Our aging Bedlington Terrier was going blind and John knew her days as a champion flyball dog were numbered. So he went in search of a replacement. Now flyball is nothing more than relay races for dogs. A four dog team takes turns running down a course with hurdles, hitting a box to get a ball and bringing the ball back to its owner. Belle loved it. But when she couldn’t see the ball anymore, her time was up. Jet’s a whippet. He can run like the wind. But he had one problem. He had absolutely no interest in a ball. Didn’t want to taste it, carry it or fetch it. No flyball for him, though he liked going to the tournements with Daddy.

John did discover Jet was crazy about lure coursing. That’s where dogs chase a fake bunny(it’s a plastic bag on a zip line) and are timed. Since it was a competition, they went to several tournaments and Jet did well. My husband was all about winning. But when John died a few years ago, that was it for Jet’s lure coursing career. Sorry, but I call that little league for dogs. I served my time in the stands raising my son.

So why am I such a dog nut? Well, I have to admit that it can get pretty lonely around here. It’s just me now–the kid is grown and on his own. So Jet is good company. He tells me when it’s time to get up(too early for a writer without a day job) and when it’s time for him to eat(about 3 in the afternoon). He makes sure I exercise by going to the back door several times a day wanting to go out. He snuggles up next to me in bed where someone else used to be. It’s a comfort.

He isn’t a barker unless a stranger comes to the door. IΒ like that. I have my peace and quiet that I want for thinking abd writing, but I have a guard dog when I need it. He keeps the back yard free of stray cats and makes sure the squirrels know to stay in the trees. If I’m careless with tissue or food, he will take care of it for me. So I guess you could say he helps me avoid some of my clutter.

I like cats too, but Jet doesn’t seem to want the competition. A friend stayed with me for a while, but we didn’t give her kitty the run of the house. Too much stress for both of them.

One thing I can’t stand is to see helpless animals abused. I’m a sucker for an animal charity and have all the junk mail to prove it. Need a free calendar? I hate to go into Petsmart on adoption day. It breaks my heart to see animals who don’t have a loving home.

What about you? Do you have a fur baby? Is one ruling your roost? Do you have a story to share about your pet or one you used to have? I grew up with a dog and a cat. I’m glad I never had allergies but so many people do. I understand if that’s keeping you from enjoying the experience. Post here and one lucky commenter will win a grab bag of three autographed paranormal romances from bestselling authors Jeaniene Frost, Kerrelyn Sparks and Kim Harrison. Wow! Plus a gift card for the book retailer of your choice.

Excited? I am. Get busy and share your story here. Deadline for the contest is February 1, my brother’s birthday.

  1. That’s such a sweet story! I love seeing all your pictures of Jet, and I think the Christmas outfits were the best pictures ever πŸ™‚ I have one cat named Darcy, and my daughter and hubby got me a hedgehog for Christmas, (Because what 30 year old wouldn’t want a hedgehog, right?). I named her Miss Kay (after the Duck Dynasty Miss Kay), and she rules this roost!

    • Are hedgehogs cuddly? Just wondering. Seems like the Duck Dynasty people have started something. πŸ˜‰

      • She actually is pretty cuddly! As long as there’s no loud noises she just wants to be loved on. If you surprise her it’s like a pin cushion though πŸ™‚ Darcy likes to lay beside her, which I thought was pretty weird. At first she just kinda looked at her and inched up next to her. Then she barely touched her with a paw, and Miss Kay prickled up. That’s all it took to decide the winner! Now whenever I take Miss Kay out of her cage Darcy has to be right next to her. It tickles me every time!

I have a fur-baby, a medium to long haired Siamese named Dandelion. Dandelion loves attention and whenever I read in bed (even though I try to hold the book with one hand and pet her with the other), she subtly tries to inch her way between the book and my eyes so I cannot read. If that doesn’t work she will butt the book with her head to make it fall over. I guess she believes she is the only thing I should give my attention. Many times, she will give up and go pout across the room, giving the occassional Siamese cry. I know if she could learn to read, she would enjoy the books almost as much as I do — especially if the books could learn to pet her…

  2. We’ve always had dogs growing up. My parents weren’t “cat people.” My husband is allergic to cats and we found out the hard way (got one for our then 2 y/o to see how he would handle a pet) that I am too, so we stick with dogs. Apparently we have odd luck with dogs. They tend to be just as nutty as we are and fit in like they have always been apart of the family. I love how a dog can make the family complete!

  3. Well, I have 3 animals – 2 dogs and a cat. Here’s a story about my newest dog:

In 2011 we acquired a new dog. It was an interesting story. We were visiting family after the annual family Christmas in the Florida/Georgia area and our cousin told us that a puppy had been hanging around her house for the past week before the holidays. She already has 4 dogs and this one was so scared and skittish that she was afraid to have him around her one year old twins. She was planning to take him down to the Humane Society but since there isn’t a huge demand for stray dogs in that small town, she was sure he would get put to sleep. Well, after playing with him for a little bit, we had him up on hubby’s lab and were hand feeding him, and I fell in love. We named him Diesel. It fits him very well because he is so strong (and we wanted another D name since both our current pets have D names). He was only 35 pounds when we brought him home from being a stray but after about 6 months of eating normal food on a regular basis, he got up to 50. We’re pretty sure he’s a pit mix of some kind. He is really sweet and loves to snuggle and lick your face. He is my lap dog and bringing him home is one of the best crazy decisions I have made.

We have a cat who WAS our baby until the real baby came along. Now poor Marlo (our cat) doesn’t get near as much attention as he used to. Our daughter loves him though and terrorises him daily. We just found out she’s allergic to cats so we have to keep them separated. It’s not that hard though because he doesn’t like being around her! LOL!

I love your pics of Jet. I have a westie named Sugar, three cats and a bunny. The cats have their own nicknames. Mama kitty, evil kitty, and rotten kitty. Lol. Love them all. They all bring their own joy to our lives. Sugar is like my third child. I couldn’t imagine not having my babies. They are so lovey and I just wanna hug and pet them all the time. Except for evil kitty. She likes to be petted for a second and she starts to purr and then she bites the day lights out of you. Lol. My fur babies !

  6. I wish I only had 1 fur baby ruling my roost. I have 4 cats all from shelters in my city. They completely run the house. Even the furniture in the living room is set up to accommodate kitty couches and climbing trees. I have a very hard time at the pet stores looking at the animals to adopt. I wish I could bring them all home and love them all.

We have a 12 year old Border Collie named Oreo. She was a shelter dog. We got her for my eldest son’s birthday about 9 years ago, but she really is a family dog. When she was younger, she loved to “herd” the kids. While I don’t think she was ever trained, she still had a working dog attitude. Now that she is getting older, I worry about her. She has been part of our family for the little kids’ whole lives. She doesn’t get around very well and I suspect she may be going blind. Age has not affected her attitude though. I bought the wrong kind of food last week–hey, the label said “Happy Dog, I thought it would make her happy–and she stared at me for 2 hours until I went to the store and bought her usual brand. She’s just like my 4th baby and I’ll really miss her when she’s gone.

    • Sounds like she has you well trained. Belle was blind and got around fine as long as we didn’t move any furniture. Dogs can be happy as long as we are there to love them. Jet herds me too. Right to the kitchen at meal time.

  8. It is plain to see how much you adore Jet. I lost my bestest buddy Sydney 8 months ago. He was an 11 yr. old Rotte and just the best dog ever, a gentle giant. He was the leader of our menagerie of 3 dogs, 3 cockatiels and 4 bunnies. Coco, a 12 yr. old Shih Tzu, is sometimes blind, deaf and senile but my daughter loves him with all her heart. Then we have Fred, a 4 yr. old rescue and sooner. Fred is “special” but God love him and we do too. Angel is a 5 yr. old (we think) rescue mini Shih Tzu. Angel also has some physical disorders but she too has won our hearts. I raised my cockatiels from babies, hand fed and love them so much. Charlie was my 1st. He is 12, a “normal” color. He talks and whistles the Bonanza and Andy Griffith theme….all the time! He is really smart. Angel is a white and grey who seems to think it is her job to break the world’s egg laying record. Snowfire is an albino who just wishes to be beautiful and does a wonderful job at it! I am watching them sleep right now! All the white bunnies are huddled together keeping warm. Yes, we love our animals!

I love seeing Jet’s pictures and enjoy reading the comments. We have always had animals whether they were dogs (Thunder our boxer was my favorite), cats and their babies (I grew up in the 50’s-60’s before over population of animals), bunnies, ducks, guinea pigs/hamsters, and strangely, crows. The first crow was interesting, he had a broken wing so my late mother took him in and fed him canned dog food till he recovered. She kept him then as a pet. He lived a long time but the funniest thing about him was he was a thief. Our house had a large yard (1/2 acre all downhill) and one day my aunt from the city came to visit. As she was walking past the clothesline (I did say the 50’s-60’s) Teddy came swooping down on her head and latched his claws onto her wig and flew as fast as his wings could take him to the bottom of the yard dropping the wig in the vegetable garden. I was about 14 at the time and we just laughed at this heavy-set elderly woman screaming “my wig, that bird stole my wig!” Now ladies, take no offense to me describing my aunt. I was about 14 and anyone in their 40’s was considered old. To this day my son remembers hearing the story and laughs so hard when he re-tells it to someone. I have no birds, just two spoiled indoor cats who watch the crows outside and I tell them they are quite safe inside. Can’t trust a crow.

  10. We had family dogs that lived outside when I was a kid, but when I moved out on my own, I got a little terrier for all the reasons you mentioned in your blog. They are the best buddies! I had Muffin for 8 years through 2 layoffs and a cross-country move. After her, I got cats because they don’t mind so much when my teaching schedule changes every semester. What they do mind is not being allowed to go outside. I would normally let them out and type outside for a bit to keep an eye on them, but I have to go out of town in February and the cat sitter wants them inside. So Lindor, a black male tuxedo, is yollowing at the back door because he only has three rooms, a garage, and a screened patio to run around in! Kaluha, the little tabby female, is waiting patiently for him to stop so she can start – the ultimate tag team! I contend that it’s not unreasonable that my cats are named after booze and chocolate if they’re driving me to drink!

Samantha was very skittish at first, but it didn’t take long for her to regain her moxy. She ended up being my mothers pet. It’s like Sam knew mom needed her more than I did. Or mom would be the crazy one sitting in front of her computer talking to herself. Sam was so protective of mom it was adorable, until she saw me as a threat once. I had always had a cat. I adopted a Tortoiseshell “Dutchess” in May. She is the sweetest cat. She loves belly rubs, and keeps me company when i am working on the computer by lying beside my laptop on the left with her next to, or on top of, the keyboard. Every once in a while both Bo and Dutchess enjoy a little game of chase around the house, usually Dutchess is the one doing the chasing!

  14. My furbabies are my whole life. My hubby and first came by our oldest freckly faced mutt after a miscarriage. We were devastated and had just move to Fort Worth, TX from League City, TX. She is my happy place. We found her online from a couple who grew restless with her rambunctious nature. She was just a little thing at 3 months old but she tore up our little apartment. We had to re-sand the baseboards, replace blinds and carpeting. But she is worth it. She always seems to be smiling. Right now she is sitting on the fireplace begging me to get frisbee off the mantle. I won’t because she will chew it up and we will lose out on playtime. Still childless and with an abundance of love to give we decided to get Sophie a sibling. That’s where our Basset Hound, Cooper comes in. We adopted him on New Years Eve 2011. He was a precious 2 year old with the best ears. Cooper has thus far enjoyed 2012 to now as an official Jones. Sophie keeps him in his place and likes to dominate him on a regular basis. He’s cool with it. As long he gets tummy scratches, crackers and cookies, he’s a happy camper. Cooper is an extremely vocal boy and he likes to come by the side of the bed around 6 every morning to whine. Of course, he whines a lot. But this boy is THE BEST nap taker! I love how he just curls up next to me on the couch we can nap nose to nose. These dogs are more than just dogs. They are my babies and a total outlet for channeling my insanity into something good and pure.

  15. I worked with rescue most of my adult life. While at a city pound, pulling smaller dogs, the workers pulled me over to a bigger dog, who was scheduled to be euthanized that day. They knew I had an Alaskan Malamute at home, so I had no issue with big dogs. In the kennel was a grubby, moth eaten looking 18 month old Siberian Husky. Of course, I pulled him, too.

As per rules, I took him to be checked out and neutered. There, the vet found that he had multiple healing broken bones: ribs and foreleg. They also found multiple cigarette burn scars. The vets described the abuse as torture.

It took a LONG time for Freskel to learn to trust anyone but me and my family stuck with it. Further vet visits found that he would never be normal. In fact, the vet used to tease me that I had an autistic son and an autistic dog. Rehoming him was out of the question, as he had so many trust issues…besides, he and I formed a wonderful, loving bond and he was amazing with my children.

I had Freskel until he passed away at 13 1/2 of old age. He was a loving and amazing dog. He moshed with my daughter, sat quietly with my autistic son and gently rough housed with my youngest. He and my Alaskan Malamute, Cheyenne, took me through many struggles and tears. I miss both of them ever day. Freskel made me a better person

I like the idea of a pet for myself, but in reality I have enough kids leaving the odd puddle around the house to harbour any illusions about what a dog would also do. Sigh… maybe when the kids are older and they can clean the puddles up themselves.

I asked what breed, then told him when she had a black female runt, it was mine. Bingo! That’s what happened!! She wasn’t breathing when she was born, and her birth family worked very hard to keep her alive for me. I met her when she was five days old, and it was love at first sight. I had puppy visitation until she was ready to come home with me. That was five years ago. I love that baby grrrrrl so much. She has really seen me through some dark times.

Cost an arm and a leg, (and some kitty guts), but he’s still here. πŸ™‚ He keeps me company during the day since I work from home. Rusty, not so much but he’s cute and my boys love him!

Men he can tolerate some what but women he will do anything to get your attention. The funny thing about Rufus is my son who went and get him for me – he can’t stand him everytime my son comes to my house and Rufus see/smells/or hear his voice he barks non stop. We also have 7 horses that roam our backyard.

I found Go-Go via an internet search and really his name just called out to me. I at the beginning of 2010 had decided to add more movement to my life and as a remember I made my middle name on FaceBook Go-Go to remind myself of my quest. Fast forward 7 months I decided to look for a dog. Go-Go was at Special Pals a no-kill shelter in Katy. I found out he had been there 6 months. He was just a year old so half of his life had been in a shelter. I had to visit him at the shelter to make sure we would mesh well and he was just the cutest thing I wanted to take him home right away but I had to wait about a week and a half for the shelter to complete the adoption process (references were called, etc).

I picked him up August 5, 2010. And since that time he has brought me so much joy. I take him to parites, book club meetings, dress him up for Halloween and other occasions! No one has ever been as happy to see me as Go-Go, even if I am only gone for just a few minutes. He jumps and dances around like it has been days. Each summer I try to take trips and this last summer I spent 5 weeks in Portland. Go-Go stayed with a friend of mine and the day I came home she offered to drop him off that morning so I could see him when I got home. She was dropping him off before work. So I guess he got really excited to be coming home because he vomited a couple of times and did #2 during the half an hour ride from her house to mine…and when my friend let him inside he ran around the house looking for me but I wasn’t home yet. It was hilarious but I felt really bad about my friends car.

Go-Go can be found on FaceBook (Go-Go Hevener). Oh and my hilarious cat Lucy can be found on FaceBook as well (Cat Confessions by Lucy).

Since getting him I have fostered 8 dogs and now that I can’t foster I go to a local no-kill shelter (Friends for Life) and volunteer my time.

  23. Horses are my passion πŸ™‚ Doc, a QH/Paint, was my barrel horse in high school and my baby! He taught me how to ride bareback, and he was always good for a cuddle when I was upset about a boy! He allowed the barn kitties to sit on his back and sun out in the corral, such a sight! My favorite memory of him happened at a rodeo-my mom was holding him while I was getting a sandwich from the cooler in our truck when he reached over…and get this…plucked Mom’s ROAST BEEF sandwich from her hand and ate it!! We were dumbfounded. A horse! Eating meat! He also found a fondness for an unattended Burger King Rodeo Burger and Bud Light, also momentarily unguarded. He was such a character! Princess is my current horse, a bay QH mare, and lemme tell ya, she THINKS she’s a princess. She’s definitely the HBIC of the corral! At feeding time she likes to come up to my bedroom window and stare at me. I swear, she’s saying, “WOMAN! FOOD! NOW!”…but probably with more cuss words. One time last summer she barged right past me into the garage-car inside, garage door closed, knocking things off the wall with her big ol’ butt (I cringed as the shovel thankfully missed Mom’s car) and straight into her treats and grain. Took a lot of shoving to get her out the door before she could eat too much (and thankfully no serious incident!) Love that girl and her attitude….she’s me in horse form ❀

Hi Gerry. Love reading about yoir adventures and your adorable jet. 13 years ago we went to get our then lab/chow his dog tags. We always get our dogs from the pound. We go in and look and found daisy. Shes a lab/whippet mix. I thought maybe greyhound but after seeing jet mg daisy kinda looks like her. Tan and skjnny with long legs. Our tippy didnt take long to welcome her and they were so close like they came from the same litter. We took daisy with us on a trip and left tippy with the neighbor. He was so heart broken he made himslef sick. So ever since we took both where ever we went. The best times were to my parents. We’d say…wanna go to grandma and grandpas? They would both start waggin their tails and gettin all excited. When we would drive down the last road they would wimper and yip with excitement. It was sooo cute. Tippy past in 2008. A year later I had found a hundred bucks in a wallet..we were also sep at the time and broke…and I had found an ad for beagle pups. Fifty bucks. So We all went to look…set my then 7 mo old down n let all the beagle pups play with wyatt n the only one to stay is the one we went home with. Reggie. My ex took the passib of our old dog very hard. They sent our a condolence card and I knew I shouldnt have showed him. But thought he was ok by then He wasnt. Cried all over again. So thats why I got him the beagle. We picked her up at the feed store out of a cardboard box as an older puppy and quickly found out she did not like men. As a house full of women at the time that suited us well. We just always wondered what her life was before to make her so scared of males, but it’s probably better we didn’t know. I just miss her dearly. She was a sweet sweet dog.

Charlie is my first dog – though I grew up with dogs at home. I will admit – the first few weeks were very tough! I am glad we made it through. We have a special bond – he knows how I feel – for example: he will come put a paw on my leg before I cry. The interesting part about our relationship ~ I became sick in 2007. No doctor could figure what was causing so much trouble. IN January 2012, Charlie became quite ill and I took him to Doggie ER (on the eve of his 1st birthday) and he was diagnosed with food allergies. Turns out – I have food allergies, too. Today, we are both doing much better. Many times I see those bumper stickers for rescue dogs that have sayings like “Who saved who?” and my response is Charlie saved Me. Not only health-wise, but he makes me a better person. We like to go on adventures, go to ‘Pug Parties’, cuddle on the couch, and go for car rides.

They often remind me of Yin and Yang, as that is how I have seen them sleep. Once, I came in and they were sleeping, hugging each, which I could NOT get a picture of. Sadly, Eris passed away recently, but she was a huge siamese mix who was a bit of a loner. We also have a golden/lab mix, Paksanarrian Dorfansdaughter (Paks), who is a handful. She is about 6 months old, and like Jet, disposes of tissues if I can’t catch her. I am lucky that she did not get the “grinning” gene from her father and brother because that is kinda creepy. It looks like they are snarling at me. She does have the sweetest smile and most expressive eyebrows.

We have two dogs and one cat all rescues. The cat was first, he was thrown out of his home at 6 weeks when his owners moved and decided they didn’t want to move him. He’s been the love of my eldest daughter for 12 years now. The second fur baby we adopted was a beautiful 9 month old boy who was gifted to a couple as their wedding gift and left in their backyard to starve when they broke off the engagement. He is my heart, and has been the center of the families attention for 8 years now. The third fur baby was another abandoned dog, he was three when his family moved to Singapore and couldn’t take him. They did give him to a rescue group, thankfully so he was not starved or worse. He was however not house trained and had issues with his back legs. He had never really been outside his crate. We had to teach him how to walk on a leash. He was afraid to go outside, he was afraid of our other dog and cat and of us. We got him strong enough to walk up stairs and finally after 2 months of constant loving care we got him house trained. My youngest daughter is his and she cherishes him every moment she has with him.
I look at these three little miracles that have brought so much beauty into our lives and can’t imagine how anyone would have given them up. It breaks my heart to see animals that are not admired for the wondrous gift that they are.

We have a pack:) all rescued “mutts.” They are amazing dogs, my seven year old has been pushing and pulling them around since day one. He sits on them and makes them wear hats and necklaces. Despite all that they seem to adore him. We have been so blessed to have them in our lives.

  32. I have 2 fur babies and love them as much as I love my fur challenged babies! Both rescused one from animal rescue and the other from a home that didn’t want her anymore. My little rat terrier (16 years old next month) who I have had since he was 7 weeks old thinks he’s huge and in charge of everything, my rottie who just turned 9 years old 2 weeks ago today( I’ve had her since she was just over a year old) thinks she’s a lap dog and is diffinately MY dog. She has addisons disease and almost died back in 2006 the day after my mom passed away. She loves me so much that she got so very sick because of my sadness and how heart broken I had been that week before Mom passed. I have had so many health issues and she’s always right there by my side making me feel better and loving me no matter what and always protecting my slippers, wheather or not I’m in them!! I love my Taz (rat terrier) and Simba (rottie) with all my heart!

  33. Hi Gerry,
So great to learn more about Jet!
Animals are such joys and such frustrations at times aren’t they?! I have two lovely cats who own my home. The first one named Alexander (after Alexander the great mind you) came into our lives and conquered literally! He was a dumpster cat that I begged my husband for us to bring in because it was a horrible winter that year and within one hour I was in love. (needless to say he loves my husband so much more than me!) So that being said a year and a half ago we got a kitten from a friend who was trying to get rid of the runt of the litter that no one wanted and we took her in and she has taken to me and is now my cat and named Tigger whic fits her well by personality and color! I love them both and couldn’t imagine life without them at least not for a longtime!

  34. The best pet I ever had was my kitty Eros. I got him when I was 14 and I was on a Greek/Roman mythology kick–thus the name πŸ˜‰ He was always the sweetest cat, loved people, and was very fluffy! He even had hair coming out of his ears, so my friends used to call him Flock of Seagulls haha. The cutest thing about him is that he would play fetch with you! Throw a little mouse or a little ball with a bell inside and he’d race after it and bring it back to you. He died a few days before this past Christmas and I will definitely miss him. He cannot be replaced.

  35. I had a sheltie named Sabrina when I was eight. Her parents were not very healthy dogs but when she grew up she was a champion breed. I don’t know how but let me describe what she looked like. She was black, red, and white. She had so much fur that you would be brushing her for an hour and still look it looked like you never brushed her. She had the fur of a male, very thick. When she walked like she was royalty, with a swagger. When we first brought Sabrina home I had to sleep next to the cage with my hand in there so she knew she wasn’t alone.

The one thing that was most memorable about Sabrina was when my parents had bought a new fridge and had let me have the box to play in. One day I took a box of fudge ice cream bars and Sabrina and went out to our clubhouse and I ate all the bars and we both fell asleep together. We were out there for over an hour when my dad came to look for us and found us sleeping. She was my baby and I loved her so much.

  37. On my ninth birthday I received a puppy he was a mutt of some sorts. I named him poochie. I trained poochie to eat yellow jackets wasps and such because I have a severe allergy. For the next six years any time I caught a glimpse on a stinging insect all I did was whistle and that crazy little guy would jump 5 feet straight up and eat the bug.

We had a cat. His name was hart. From the moment my son Andy saw him he called him the Dalmatian cat. He climbed the Christmas tree his first Christmas! With his tail hanging out the top. I couldn’t laugh then, but I do now. He loved boxes! He went to kindergarten with my daughter Lillie for pet show and tell! He slept with Andy a lot ! It was Andys cat. But he was loved by everyone! Sadly in October of last year. He had a stroke. And he passed away. We really miss him. Funny thing a few weeks later. We found this little fellow. Grey striped. We named him spike. He didn’t take harts place. But it sure eased the pain a little! We also have dogs, a turtle named mister, and a guinea pig named gizmo!

  39. Toby came to me June 30, 2001. It was this date that we celebrated as his ‘birthday’ for the rest of our time together. My ex-husband and I went to FAPS (a local no kill shelter) to drop off newspapers and aluminum cans collected for the shelter. We had no intentions of getting a dog, but when I walked past the kennel with this adorable corgi mix inside, my interest was piqued. We went home and something in the back of my mind told me to call the shelter to ask about the little red and white fellow I had seen. After speaking with staff on the phone and finding that Toby had been at the shelter for quite some time and had some medical issues, my heart just knew that he was meant for me. I quickly jumped back in the car and raced to get him.
When he came to me he was pretty shy and was unsure about toys and playing. I had never had a shelter dog before but had been told that he would come around. And come around he did. People always say you save a dog when you adopt them, but I see it as the opposite. Toby saved me. He was the only constant in my life over the years. He saw me through my divorce, moving back home, the death of my father, and so many more difficult times. He always seemed to know when I needed an extra snuggle. I often tell people that he was the only good thing that came out of my marriage to my ex-husband. =)
Toby was a family member who traveled to everyone in the family’s homes. He loved to go for a ride whether it be to the dog park, to the mountains to visit his ‘Grandma” or to the beach for vacation. He often had overnight sleepovers with my nephew whom loved him from birth. Toby was even the poster child for the local dog park, as it was him that inspired me to help create the non-profit that is responsible for raising the funds to get it opened. I could not have asked for a better dog.
I was lucky enough to get to spend 10 years with Toby in my life. In 2011 he started to show his age. In October of that year he started to get sick and lose weight. Due to his advanced age (13 years is pretty old for a corgi) the vet did not want to do exploratory surgery, especially since he was sure it was cancer as corgis are prone to it. So we provided comfort care, and on November 14, 2011 I made one of the hardest decisions of my life. We brought Toby home and buried him in the backyard.
Everyday is hard, even over a year later. I see the family in the apartment complex next door walk their corgi and I smile. I am part of several rescue groups. I am l waiting for the time when the right dog will come along. But until then, I will always have the memories of my years with Toby.

I have been blessed with Three furbabies. All cats. The queen of the universe – aka Daria – She knows she is ‘all that’ and she knows she is loved. She makes sure when I am sick that my hand is ‘held’ the whole time – I swear she checks my temperature. I picked her up from the Humane Society at six weeks. Two weeks later I was contemplating getting her a ‘buddy’ and Pumpkin dropped into our lives – literally – someone left their house leaving behind a six week old kitten and three month old puppy – He fit into the palm of my hand – now he is bigger than the other two combined.
Number 3 cat – aka Chloe – came to be ‘babysat’ for a month. Three years ago. it took her a month to come out of hiding. After I had her for the month I found out I was her fifth house in seven months. And she was heading for the Humane Society – she was terrified as it was – I kept her. One of the happiest days of my live was when she walked across my legs when I was sitting in the living room – like I was not even there – took her two and a half years to become a ‘cat’ LOL.
My babies. Different personalities – lots of love.

I have two fur sisters. A Scottie (Mackie) and a miniature dashund (Pipsqueek) They absolutely rule the house. Mackie has been in the house the longest and she thinks it is her job to protect the house from EVERYTHING outside, Including air sometimes. If someone dares to walk up our street or stand in their own yard she lets us know right away!!! She tends to want to play with all the different animals that come visit. Especially cats and squirrels. We have a big bay window at the front of the house and whenever she can she stands guard and watches for us. She does all this for one doggie biscuit.
When she is not guarding the house she actually watches television with me. She really likes criminal minds. Well she likes watching Shemar Moore and Matthew Gray Gubler. Her very favorite channel is of course animal planet because she can see so many of her friends. She stands up on two legs to watch and can’t quite figure out why they are not coming out of the back or side of the television so they can play. My dad and her like watching football. That’s the only sport that she seems to enjoy.
She also thinks it is her job to discipline our youngest sister. Whenever we have a hard time getting “little one” to come to us she goes and rounds her up for us. Pipsqueek will eventually give in and come.
Both Mackie and Pipsqueek greet me when I get home. Mackie will actually try to say hello. Pipsqueek will sometimes come to greet me at the door but most often demands I come to her to say hello.
    I love them both!!

    Tell your brother happy birthday.

  42. I have 2 fur babies. Bitties is a 13 year old grey and white cat and Phoebe is a 2 year old black cat. Phoebe constantly chases after Bitties to play with her but Bitties wants nothing to do with that. I have had cats my whole life and I had one dog growing up. I love all animals but I am and will always be a cat person. If I could adopt and take care of every homeless cat in the world I would. I hate how people think of animals as things you can just get rid of when theyre no longer cute. Would you do that to your child? Tell your brother Happy Birthday!

  44. I have a yellow lab/ Australian shepherd mix puppy. Amara is 8 months old and a giant. I moved in with my boyfriend almost a year ago and his roommate decided he wanted a dog. So he got one, however he is a young adult and works nights. So therefore he sleeps throughout the day and goes to work at night. Amara was trapped in the apartment all day with no one really raising her. Therefore Amara become my boyfriend’s and mine. I admit it we stole her. I will take her on my runs in the morning and play and spoil her like she was my own. My boyfriend has the same job as the roommate, but when he gets home at four am he takes the dog out and wakes up every morning at eight to take her out and feed her. As funny as it is she only listens to me and loves playing tackle with my boyfriend. Now I admit I was not wanting to get a dog so soon in our relationship, but Amara has grown on me like crazy and when we can finally get our own place Amara is coming home with us. I know not all stories are as “good ending” as ours but I hope every animal can find a good responsible family like mine.
    Happy Birthday to your brother.
